Boston Brace
The Boston brace, also known as the thoracic-lumbar-sacral orthosis (TLSO), is a type of brace used to treat scoliosis, a condition where the spine curves sideways. The brace is made of hard plastic and covers the torso from the armpits to the hips.
The Boston brace works by applying pressure to the curved parts of the spine, which helps prevent the curve from getting worse. It is typically worn for 18-23 hours a day, and patients are encouraged to remove the brace for activities like showering and sports.
The brace is most effective when used on patients whose spinal curves are between 25-40 degrees. It is not typically recommended for patients with curves greater than 45 degrees.
While the Boston brace can be uncomfortable and restrict mobility, it is a non-surgical option that can help prevent scoliosis from progressing and potentially requiring surgery. It is important for patients to follow their doctor's instructions for wearing and caring for the brace.
